What if we evolve into it?

What if we aren’t born a certain way, we choose to become it day by day?

Here’s something that’s been on my mind, and I’m still trying to work it out. Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments or if you’ve thought this before too.

What if not everyone is born as straight or gay, (or somewhere else on the spectrum), but evolves into it?

On one hand, I see it as an evolution, where we weren’t trying to cover anything up, we just changed. On the other hand, I see it as something we always knew but kept it hidden away, maybe even to the point of forgetting about it, until one day we let go and realized what was there.

What if some of us spend a large part of our lives straight because we didn’t know any better, or because that’s what was placed on us, or simply because we felt straight. Then based on life experiences, we slowly evolve into a different part of the spectrum?

Perhaps it’s more of an unraveling. A removing of the norms and pressures that were put on us, either by ourselves, or those around us, or society. Some people seem to know early in life and they remain so for their entire life. Others take decades to remove everything that isn’t ours. Slowly it turns from “what’s wrong with me”, to “here's what isn’t making me happy”, to “here’s who I really am”.

It maybe even starts only on the inside, a knowing deep down, but is kept hidden and safe from the outside world. And the process of unraveling is an art form taking place visibly, slowly, over time. Maybe changing your wardrobe one thing at a time, cutting your hair shorter and shorter, or just smiling a little brighter each day. It just keeps progressing, as you explore, and release what doesn’t serve. Until one day you know what it is that you’ve been evolving into. One day you know what was deep inside.
